At orientation, you will meet with an advisor, take your math placement exam, get your student ID, select classes and meet new and continuing students. It’s the perfect way to celebrate your admission to Maryland and get familiar with campus while also preparing for your time as a Terp.
Orientation is required for all new University of Maryland students including freshman, transfer and international students, regardless of residency status. The New Student Orientation Office provides the orientation schedule and registration information. For questions and additional information, contact the Orientation Office.
To register for orientation:
Incoming students who wish to change their intended major should email their request to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at ApplyMaryland@umd.edu. Once the major change is made, you must contact the Orientation Office to determine whether your orientation date will be affected. Not all colleges advise students on each orientation date, and failing to check with the Orientation office may result in you having to reschedule your orientation session on the day you arrive for your program. Please note that the major change process will take several days to be processed, and you should refrain from contacting the Orientation Office until after you receive confirmation that your major has been updated.
All first year students, regardless of SAT or AP/IB scores, must take the Math Placement Exam before coming to New Student Orientation. There are no exemptions from taking the Math Placement Exam for first year students.
All transfer students are encouraged to take the Math Placement Exam before coming to New Student Orientation, and are required to take the Math Placement Exam if they do not have equivalent credit for MATH140 and have received a 2.0 in that class or are entering the School of Public Health or College of Behavioral & Social Sciences, regardless of prior course work and credits. Students in the A. James Clark School of Engineering and Robert H. Smith School of Business do not need to take the Math Placement Exam.
